Village Council Brief for January 9, 2006

The council of the village of Mariemont convened at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9, at the administration building. Here are the highlights of that meeting.

Welcome aboard
Villager Melissa Schmit took an oath of office to become one of the village’s seven council members. She replaces Charlie Sage.

Incumbent council members Bill Ebelhar, Rex Bevis and Charlie Thomas also took their respective oaths.

Mischief in Mariemont
Police Chief Rick Hines reported that officers will be conducting some extra patroling in certain areas of the village due to an increase in juvenile offenses being reported within the last month. Some instances include the theft of hubcaps and other degrees of vandalism.

But there has also been an increase in police reports filed by residents. In one case, an individual reported having $1 (one dollar) in merchandise disappear from his/her home. The case has been deferred to a higher authority.

The Lights went out in Mariemont
Council will be in contact with Cinergy to have a great many lights that do not work either replaced or repaired. It has been reported by residents and officials alike that there are numerous light fixtures around the village that do not work, and some of the lights have not been functioning for almost two years. Council has made attempts in the past to coerce Cinergy to expedite their efforts to remedy the lighting problems, since the lights fall under the responsibility of the energy company. But now council will tell Cinergy that the situation must addressed immediately due to safety concerns.

Miscellaneous
Council member Rex Bevis suggested council discuss enforcing a law requiring cellular earphone attachments mandatory while driving through the village. Bevis said he does not want people talking on their cell phones, while driving, unless they have the ear pieces.

“We are very urban, with 3,400 people located within one mile, we have confusing street patterns, a school district and lots of traffic,” Bevis said of the village. “This is something I want done (for safety reasons).”

Village employees are already not allowed to drive and talk on their cell phones simultaneously.

Council will be addressing the issue at a later date.

Ordinances
note: council must read ordinances three times (one reading per council meeting, pending any exceptions such as emergencies)

* “To enter into contract with H. Hafner & Sons, Inc., for brush, gravel, dirt, construction fill and leaf dumping in consideration for money and the right to farm part of the south 80 acres.” Council unanimously approved this ordinance

* “To restrict parking on Mariemont Avenue/Pleasant Street.” This was only the second reading. The reason ordinances are read three times is so villagers have an opportunity to voice their opinions or any concerns they might possess before council approves any changes or additions. The third and final reading of this ordinance will be at the next council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23.
