Double the dining experience

Those who have been accumulating diner's points from the National Exemplar now have a more lucrative reason to eat large.

You know about this, right? You visit the National Exemplar, you earn points that result in reimbursable coupons to be used in the restaurant.

Well, maybe you don't. If not, it is not too late to get started; in fact, the steaks, err, stakes have just gotten higher.

The restaurant offers a Frequent Diner's card which anyone can join for a $10 enrollment. Upon activation the new member will be rewarded 200 points.

From that point on, members will be given one point for every dollar spent in the restaurant when they present the card to their server.

When the member reaches 500 points they will be able to take $25 off their bill whenever it is convenient for them.

But now the benefits have increased. The National Exemplar is now offering double points on Monday evenings

"This is a great avenue to reach your rewards goal quickly and enjoy complimentary appetizers, desserts, theater tickets and gift certificates," spokesperson Lisa Hopkins said.

The result: The more you dine, the more you save.

But that is not all. Southerby’s Pub, located off the lobby of the Mariemont Inn, has a new back bar with distinctive lighting and an LCD flat panel TV. Guiness on tap is now also offered for $4.25 a pint. These are the beginning phases of Southerby’s remodeling. Visitors will be seeing new amenities added in the upcoming weeks as well. Happy Hour is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday with $1 off all drinks and reduced priced appetizers.

Dilly Deli shows off artistic side

The Dilly Deli will have a table at this year's "Taste of Duveneck", a fund-raiser hosted by the Cincinnati Art Museum in Eden Park. The proceeds of the event will benefit a project specific to the Duveneck Association. "Past projects have included the purchase of significant works of art, the conservation of existing works, the installation or renovation of galleries and the funding of popular art programs such as the Family First Saturdays," owners of the Dilly Deli said.

Present at this year's fund-raiser will be a dozen wine tables and two dozen tables from many of the area's top restaurants. The Dilly Deli's Chef Eric will be serving a delicacy from the kitchen.

It is estimated that more than 500 guests will attend the event, and the invitation is open to everyone. The 17th annual "Taste of Duveneck" will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 7. Reservations are necessary and the cost is $75 per person. To make a reservation, or to inquire more about the event, contact Barbara Kruze at the Art Museum 639-2964 or e-mail bkruze@cincyart.org

Tycoon Harry's considered "the Best"

It was exactly one year ago that Jennifer Fetchko decided to open a full-service barber-salon for the grooming, manicuring, waxing and cutting of hair for gentlemen. Her goal was simple: to create an environment where men will feel comfortable entering.

Celebrating her first anniversary since opening Tycoon Harry’s Grooming for Men, Fetchko was given a handsome present wrapped with positive propaganda.

City Beat‘s Best of Cincinnati 2007 named her business the “best hair salon” for men.

“This feels real good. One year later it is still exciting, it still feels new,” Fetchko said. “Everyone here at the salon feels honored to be recognized. We have done a lot of work in the past year to make a great atmosphere.’

“To hear that City Beat said we were the best is great news,” Chelsea Mitchell, one of Tycoon Harry’s artisans, said. Mitchell specializes in hair coloring, highlights, low lights, grey blending, chair massage, and is now conducting full-body massages.

Fetchko wanted to open a salon for men because she knows how it is to walk into a non-inviting salon, “or a place that is more worried about being trendy than it is about being accommodating,

“So, I want to create a place where men feel at home,” she said, adding she is aware that many men are shy about having their hair cut in a salon and many more men are afraid – even embarrassed – about inquiring on hair removal.

When entering Tycoon Harry’s males will be able to have their hair cut, receive a scalp massage, a hot towel face and neck treatments, manicures, pedicures, massages, facial treatments and body waxing.

And speaking of body waxing, it is now officially “back waxing” season. Fetchko, who not only cuts hair but is also a skin care specialist (an aesthetician in the industry vernacular), admits she has never heard any male complain after having their back waxed (if it’s necessary).

“Honestly, it is only a couple minutes of ouch -- and not super ouch -- and afterwards you have weeks of self-confidence spending time outdoors,” Fetchko said, adding having your body waxed is nothing like what people saw in the movie, “40 Year-Old Virgin.” “That was purposely done to look much more painful than it is.”

To set up an appointment with Jennifer for a haircut, facial, hot water treatment or for body waxing, call 404-9644; for an appointment with Chelsea for a consultation, to have your hair colored or for a massage, call 300-6246; and to make an appointment with Tara Evans for a precision haircut, call 205-3099.

Big Wine Testing at Dilly Deli

The weather is nice and it is prime time to enjoy a nice outdoor social event that has some good taste.

The Dilly Deli is hosting a huge wine tasting event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, featuring the Northwest Core Collection.

The Northwest Core Collection is a marketing group who represent small, premium Pacific Northwest wineries who otherwise would not be able to maintain a presence in the marketplace, according to the owners of the Dilly Deli.

The wine tasting will also have Elizabeth Parenteau, the Midwest Regional Manager for the Collection, on hand to answer questions regarding the wine selection, which will include 15 to 20 wines from wineries like A to Z, Bergstrom, Hatcher Wine Works, Penner-Ash, Rex Hill, Seven Hills and Solena.

Pinot Noirs, to be sure, but also Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and others - all from Oregon or Washington.

The owners are hoping for cooperating weather, because they want this to be the first wine tasting of the year on the patio.

Cost for the wine tasting is $20 per person. Reservations are necessary. To make areservationsor call the Dilly Deli at 561-5233.
